Staying in place like Sitio de Calahonda in Mijas, Spain validated our entire concept of living overseas. Where the El Campello rental was purely a beach house, the Mijas location was a beautiful home. Although only a one bedroom, one bathroom apartment we were extremely comfortable living 10 minutes from the beach and having a view of the ocean every day.
The beach has the longest boardwalk in Spain. Almost every morning we would walk three miles in either direction and then make or purchase breakfast. Then mid to late afternoon we would pick a restaurant for our second and only other meal. Mijas is known for its white homes along the beach for as far as you could see.
Mijas also had some of the best restaurants in Spain. We enjoyed a wine tasting at the local wine shop with the owner Cassie, and had arepas and sample platters at the Columbian restaurant. Our three favorites though were Coriander, with Indian and Mexican menus, Da Vinci with excellent pasta, and Meson de Dona Lola which featured Crispy Duck Salad and grilled meats.
What makes living oversea enjoyable besides the sights you see and food you eat? The people you get to know and meet. Dining at Coriander three times we became friends with the owner, Sam and our favorite waiter, Jenny. Our last night in Spain, we met a nice couple (Jeff and Alison) from near Windsor, England and found so much in common that our one hour dinner approached three hours once they joined our table to continue visiting. I am sure a future excursion will include spending time with them.
